Hennepin County is no longer accepting non-reusable clothing and textiles at their drop-off sites. The program is being discontinued because the county is unable to find a vendor that can verify the material is being recycled.
Options for reducing textile waste:
- Before purchasing, consider whether you need the item, may buy it used, or may rent or borrow it instead.
- Invest in high-quality, durable goods. Avoid trendy, cheaply made, or intentionally disposable items.
- Extend the life of your textiles - repair tears and holes, consider creative ways to re-purpose items (i.e. old textiles can be used as rags or stuffing for pillows). For mending help, go to Fix-It Clinic.
When you're ready to get rid of textiles, consider donation options. Inquire before donating as acceptance requirements vary. Find donation options near you on the Choose to Reuse website.
