The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) has installed bus only shoulder lanes on Highway 169 between Highway 610 and I-694. Maple Grove Transit will operate all Route 782 trips in both directions instead of using Zachary and Hemlock Lane. The Route 782 use of Highway 169 will begin on Monday August 26 as a test for a three-week period. An assessment will then be made on whether this route change will be permanent.
There is a bridge segment in each direction where the buses have to exit the shoulder lane and use the general purpose traffic lane.
Signs mark the approved segments of the freeway for the legal use of bus only shoulder lanes. Bus drivers can only operate on the signed segments of the shoulder lanes. Bus drivers must also adhere to the following rules set in Minnesota statute regarding the use of the shoulder lanes:
- If traffic is stopped, buses must not exceed 20 mph.
- If traffic is moving, bus speed must be no more than 10 mph faster than the traffic, up to a maximum 35 mph.
- If traffic is moving faster than 35 mph, buses must operate in the regular traffic lane.
